Interesting bird

Please see two previous posts for pictures of our ocean adventure. While in Point Reyes we happened upon this interesting bird. After checking my bird identification book I have concluded that it is of the family Scolopacidae, Genus, Driftwoodius, more common name, Driftwood Sandpiper.

Hehe! Actually, I think it's some sort of Yellowlegs.

Funny you should mention Yellowlegs, for that was my other choice. The thing that stumped me was the beak. Yellowlegs have narrow long ones....so....I thought Sandpiper, whose beaks are not quite as narrow. I am scratching my head over the width of the beak, and the crook in it. Perhaps it is an aberration? The other thing I wondered is if this bird is a stray. My book states that Yellowlegs might winter in Point Reyes and summer far north in your area, so if this is a Yellowlegs, he must be slightly confused.

You might be right. Bird identification is not my strong suit.

Perhaps he's just a lazy yellowlegs, and decided to skip the trip....
